1. You have worked in the “tech/privacy/infosec/cybersecurity” field for over 10 years. Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to choose this industry?
I haven’t had what might be considered a traditional path into cybersecurity. I received my bachelor’s and master’s in business and managed finance teams for a healthcare nonprofit for several years. I’ve always had a passion for learning new things and when the opportunity to join the cybersecurity team at Target came up, I jumped in with both feet. It all started at a neighborhood gathering when someone mentioned opportunities on their team. I was curious to learn more and excited to make a change, so that night I updated my resume and sent it the next morning. From there I’ve had many great career experiences. Looking back, you can build your network in many different ways. Just always be open and flexible to how it may show up.
2. The technology industry, like far too many industries, is still very male-dominated. Would you mind sharing some of the struggles you experienced breaking into the field?
Working in a male-dominated industry can come with challenges. Through my personal experience, I’ve found that one challenge is ensuring you continue to grow professionally once you’ve broken into the industry. It’s more than just getting your foot in the door – it’s also about progressing into leadership positions.
The people I work with and network with have helped pave the way for my career growth. I’m grateful for Target’s many programs and partnerships to grow overall female and people of color representation across our technology teams as well as elevate underrepresented talent into management and leadership roles. Target fosters an environment that encourages continuous learning and development, which has allowed me to broaden my security acumen through industry certifications and grow as a cybersecurity leader.
3. What is your everyday schedule like, and how do you manage to integrate your career with your personal life?
No day is ever the same! I spend a lot of time collaborating with my team members – whether it’s creating security policy and governance solutions, training and communications, or supporting our teams with diversity and inclusion initiatives.
As we’ve all had to adapt to new ways of working and balancing professional and personal needs, I’ve been very fortunate to have a supportive team. Target encourages a healthy work-life balance and provides latitude and flexibility to prioritize each day as you need.
“I’ve been a part of the EWF sisterhood for the past four years – it’s an honor to be surrounded by talented and diverse women who support and advocate for each other.“
4. What does the EWF mean to you? How long have you been an EWF member?
I’ve been a part of the EWF sisterhood for the past four years – it’s an honor to be surrounded by talented and diverse women who support and advocate for each other. I have personally benefited so much from EWF’s programming and mentorship, and was inspired to complete my Master Mentor Designation so I can pay it forward and help other women advance in the industry.
5. Are there any particular women who have inspired you?
My mom came to America from Vietnam with four children and a few pieces of clothing. She went back to school to learn computer programming and help create a new life for us as a family. She overcame many of the same struggles that women experience today and became a successful businesswoman – teaching me to never forget where you started and to make space for others to follow in your footsteps.
And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the many women in EWF whose leadership styles and compassion motivate me every day!
“Many of the great women I’ve met through EWF’s Lift Mentoring program and throughout my career have challenged and pushed me to continue growing.“
6. How has a mentor or sponsor-supported you in your career?
I think it’s important to have mentors throughout your career. No matter where you’re at in your professional journey, you can always learn from others. Many of the great women I’ve met through EWF’s Lift Mentoring program and throughout my career have challenged and pushed me to continue growing.
It’s also personally very important to me to have sponsors – especially in an industry that needs more diversity and inclusion. I’m incredibly dedicated to creating a seat at the table for everyone and I firmly believe if there is not a seat at the table, go make your own table. Mentors can help you develop both personally and professionally. Where sponsors are people in your organization or within the industry that have the ability to influence and help lift you up in your career. I think both are equally valuable in different stages of your life.
7. What advice would you give to an aspiring female leader in the tech industry?
Pursue your passion even if you’re afraid. Be bold and don’t give up. Find people who will support and celebrate you.
Cybersecurity and technology are continuously evolving industries – it’s okay to admit when you don’t know something, but always be open to learning and trying new things.
Equally important is building your network, even if it feels uncomfortable. Join organizations like EWF to meet others, develop connections, and surround yourself with people who want to help you succeed.
8. What are you most proud of?
I’m proud to work for a company that walks the walk when it comes to making a difference. Target has partnered with EWF for more than five years helping to build and raise women up in cybersecurity, risk, privacy and now expanding to our Target India team members. Being part of the EWF, I had the opportunity to get involved in many areas to make a difference including the Action Plans for the Rising Leaders Forum. I was so proud of the team in 2019 when Target was awarded the EWF Corporate Award. This is a testament to the work we are doing for diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am humbled and proud to be a part of leading these efforts for Target’s tech team.
